Book Tip: Measuring the User Experience

Today I would like to introduce an absolute classic, which should not be missing in any UX'ler's shelf. Because here you can find concentrated knowledge about the measurability of UX on 288 pages.

Being able to make user experience and success measurable - that is a requirement for good UX design. The first reading into this topic is relatively quick, but the clean measurement and the correct handling of UX metrics is rather a supreme discipline - because the devil is often in the details.

The book Measuring the User Experience by Albert and Tullis provides a remedy here, because it is the perfect reference work on the subject of the measurability of user experience. It is precise, scientifically sound and goes into sufficient detail - and the special thing is: It is written in a very understandable way at the same time. A lot of knowledge is really conveyed here, which is why the book is one of my personal favorite UX books.

It covers basic statistical knowledge such as the scale level of data and how to create understandable graphs. Many UX metrics presented are part of the 1×1 of usability measurement (e.g. success, time, error, and efficiency). But the book goes beyond that and introduces other ways to measure, especially in relation to usability tests and surveys based on self-reporting (e.g. questionnaires). In doing so, the authors never avoid difficult topics and openly address challenges and limitations of methods.

There are also brief insights into other methods (e.g. card sorting) and more advanced topics such as measuring emotions and usability scorecards.

My personal favorite chapters are the 10 myths about UX metrics and the 10 keys to success, which are more about how to use UX metrics. Overall, though, every single chapter in this book is worth reading.

Target Group

Due to its good comprehensibility, the book is suitable for UX beginners to learn as well as for old UX hands as a reference work. The topic is interesting for UX researchers, designers and also for project managers who want to measure their success with numbers.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is concerned with the topic of UX measurability or simply wants to finally have a say when it comes to UX metrics.
